Solitaire Beach Season Review

Solitaire Beach Season is a solitaire game in which players match 2 cards of the same value to complete levels. This game is a port of a free to play app store game. However content wise with regards to the port (at least on the steam version). There have been some additions to the game these being the steam achievements and trading cards. However the only changes to the game made have been in the removal of microtransactions. Since the appstore version provides players with the option to pay real money for coins earned in the game. Coins are used to buy hints or the right to skip to the later worlds. I welcome this as you have to pay for the game on steam. Technically however there are no changes between the 2 versions as far as I can find out.

Solitaire Beach Season Level 1

Although this game has solitaire in the title you would expect the game on paper to be a solitaire game. But the game is actually a match 2 card game which is disappointing. This is especially disappointing, if you were looking to play on a beach themed solitaire game. But it isn’t as simple as just matching 2 cards together to clear the board. In order to complete each level you don’t match all the cards on the table. But rather you match all the golden cards on the level. The golden cards are usually buried by other cards.

However the game works against you on some level. Since many level designs are problematic explicitly those which have an odd number on their layout. At times it is impossible to complete these levels in the game.

The game technically isn’t very good in giving out cards. Sometimes it will give you cards you cannot have or make sets from. The shuffle ability that is available in game effectively illustrates this. This abilities intention is meant to change the cards that are currently on your deck/set layout. But instead it randomly picks cards from the computer that determine what cards you receive. Even if the card you don’t have the card in your deck or layout. Consequently if you are given the wrong cards you will have to redo the level in order to complete it. This flaw combined with little to no strategy involved will frustrate many people.  Especially casual gamers who want to play on a laidback card game.

With regards to design of the game I feel that the game could have been more interesting. The game isn’t particularly summery outside of the game’s subject/art. Even if it has “fun: vacation, summer, the beach, the sea!” written on the description on steam. I think that the game would be better if it had some story in game. Even if it was a simple story about a couple going on holiday to a beach resort. This suggestion is based on the fact that there is a couple on the art work for this game.

The layouts for the cards aren’t really related to summer. Mostly it is just random shapes/piles of cards. There is not a single layout of a sun or other related objects. Having levels set out as summer centric objects would have made the game a better experience and more fitting. Particularly because the game is based around a summer holiday this was a missed opportunity.

But I do think that the visual design for the game is good. The graphics in the game are colourful and provide the game with a unique personality. Although one thing that I didn’t like was how there is 12 levels in the game. But there isn’t a unique background for each level. As I would have been expected each level to look unique. I also like that you can also change the deck of cards to a different design. As there is a small variety of different card decks to pick from if you wanted a new look for your cards. There are many designs ranging from traditional designs through to more cartoon style.

However with regards to music played in game. The music on offer is of decent quality even if it is a limited amount. Even though the music in game is summery and cheerful. The issues with the songs is that the songs are on repeat. This gets does get repetitive over time. As a result of this you will most likely turn off the music after a good while. Sadly there is no choice of selecting a different style of music to play in the game. Which I think is a shame as there could have been a few different track lists they could have done.

Solitaire Beach Season Fish

Overall I would only recommend buying Solitaire Beach Season when it is on sale on steam. Purely because the normal price is £3.99 is too much for this game. However for 39p it is ok for an afternoon’s entertainment. However this game is also the same as the last solitaire game I reviewed by the developer of this game. Check my review for it here!. Although, the differences between the 2 game is the assets and music as they are different. It is particularly noticeable in the layout of the levels are the exact same as the each other. Even some the levels are in the same order with nothing to mask it.
