Coloring Book For Adults Review

As I have previously reviewed the children’s counterpart to this game you can see my review for it here. I only feel it’s fair that I review the ‘adult’ counterpart. This game operates in the same mentality but instead of providing cartoon colouring pages. Instead it offers ‘adult’ colouring pages which is more geared towards adults.

But to anyone who unaware as to what ‘adult’ colouring is generally speaking. They are colouring books/pages that are mostly suitable for anyone to look at. Although giving an adult one isn’t patronising compared to a standard colouring book/page. The pictures are generally mandalas, patterns or realistic images common examples of subjects featured include animals and flowers. Rather than using childlike images in a cartoon style. Generally these types of colouring pages are popular with millennial’s and older children. Adult colouring pages are also common place in nursing homes and many other care settings.

When I was first looking at the game it actually seemed like it was going to be a different game. I hoped for this because the game is meant for adults rather than children. I thought they might have had a different approach when it comes down to designing the game as a whole. They might have even changed some of the features of the game even on an aesthetic level. However what I don’t like about the game is the steam description is the wording. As it states that it offers (and I quote) ‘over 20 coloring pages with up to 30 coloring sheets each’. Even though later on it states ‘Over 20 coloring books with up to 30 sheets each.

Whilst it is true, that in each book there is up to 30 sheets on offer. There are some flaws in how it is written since if you have over 20 pages and up to 30 sheets. I’m guessing it is meant to say topic/book instead of pages. Considering that the next sentence stating the fact that you can colour in other topics. One thing to bear in mind with this game is the limited amount of content on offer.  If you’re playing the game as is without buying extra content. The amount of content is limited to 3 themes these being mandalas, Owls and Dinosaurs, everything else on offer in the game you must pay for.

Now gameplay wise the mechanics haven’t really changed. You still have to click on the section of the image you want to colour in. After you have coloured in the image you get to put on a filter onto it, before saving it. On a technical level I feel that the way the game is designed shouldn’t be the way you colour in sections. Especially in any art game/software as it limits creativity of what players can create with the game.

But what has changed is the difficulty. As expected the children’s colouring game has large sections for the players to colour in. Which is great considering the games intended audience. Thankfully the images in this game do have small sections for you to colour in. However as a result of this it does take a lot longer for you to complete an image. Sometimes the game won’t let you colour them in automatically. Sometimes it can take a few clicks for game to recognise that you want to colour in the section.

Lengthwise comparing it to the previous game this game is longer in length. In this game it took me 10 minutes to complete an image. Whilst in the children’s colouring game it only took me 2 minutes to complete an image. I think that due to the much longer play time needed to complete an in game.  As well as the fact that images are laden with small sections. I wouldn’t advocate letting children play this game due to how fiddly it can get. Despite the fact that content wise there is nothing harmful in the game. Alternatively, people might believe that since it is rated 3+ by Pegi, children can play this without any problems at all. They would be wrong, though as many children will lose interest in or become frustrated with the game. That is before you bring in the extra content you can buy.

Content wise I think that it is visually a better game as the images are more complex. This is more fitting for the target audience of the game. Visually the images are drawn to a better standard than the previous game. This is noticeable as when I did colour in images in the game. I found that none of the sections had unintentionally gone into another section. This was an issue on some of the pictures on the children’s colouring game.

But I feel that the game has not progressed when it comes to image style selection on offer. Primarily because it is only zentangle/occasional cartoon style images on offer. When it comes to the design of the images I think that it should have at least some realistic images. I would have like some of the images particularly animals/landscapes to be realistic. Since having the same art styles for all the images is quite repetitive. Especially, considering that this game could offer much more.

Whenever you have finished what the game offers for free. You can buy a full access pass for the game which is $12.99(£9.42). Alternatively you can pay $1.99(£1.44) each theme you would like to buy. Although it does work out cheaper to get the full access pass. The content you get on the full access pass I feel is a waste of money.

Whilst the content is better than some of the content found in the kids colouring game. However you can actually buy an ‘adult’ colouring book for the price of this game. I feel that there is better ways of digital colouring. I think this as there is colouring pages that are freely available on the internet that you can colour in. You could even use images found online in an art program like paint. Better yet you could print colouring pages off the internet and colour them in. Although a better idea is get access to a colouring page/book and do it physically.

Overall I can’t recommend this game as it is poor value for money. This game is essentially an ‘adult’ version of a kids colouring game. There is little to no differences in the games design (other the images.). It is noticeable that there is plenty of content in the game that is the same as the children’s version.
