Animation Throwdown: The Quest for Cards is a free-to-play multiplayer online trading card game. In this game, players build a collection of collectable cards to use in in-game battles. This game is based upon various animated series owned by FOX, like Futurama and Family Guy.
In this game, each card has its own purpose, such as being a character or an accessory to create a combo (which is more powerful). Cards also have 2 factors that affect where/when you should use them. The first factor a card has is the strength of your cards, which determines how hard you hit when attacking other cards. This factor is essential for attack but not defence. Â The second factor is life points; this indicates how much damage your card can withstand before being destroyed. In addition, a card might have abilities such as healing other cards or providing boosts.

Although this game is easy to pick up, it becomes more complex over time because you have to balance your deck against what cards opponents may have.
I feel the game is fun to play, and I like its tactics. However, the battles drag on because of the animations used in-game. After the first few instances, it becomes stale and time-consuming. I don’t particularly like how this game has so many restrictions on crafting combinations. This is because combinations are researched in real time. The exception, of course, is that you can pay to bypass it. I dislike that you have to research combos before you are allowed to play them.  This is unnecessary in-game and just an extra cash wall. Another thing I noticed is that this game is a direct port from Kongregate/App Store. This is noticeable because it has a “Tap to continue” prompt on the game screen.

Like any other multiplayer online game, this game has no ending per se. But like any other free-to-play game, it has energy restrictions, so you can only play for so long. Â However, if your objective is to complete all the Steam achievements, it will take over 100 hours. Nevertheless, if you want to be the best player on the server, it is quite a task. One that will take plenty of time (and cash) to do the work needed. To do this, you will need to play constantly to reach the top of each leaderboard. Plus, having a wide selection of high-level cards is necessary for any chance of success.

This game, unsurprisingly, has microtransactions. The game also does advertise them frequently. Some are at a lower/reasonable price. Unsurprisingly, you can spend obscene amounts of cash on them. For instance, I started the game once, and a full-page ad popped up. The ad was for a deal priced at $99.99, as shown on screen. With this deal, you get 10000 gems, 10 packs of cards, 120 hero tokens and 4 legendary cards. Normally, for the same price, you would only get the 10000 gems.

Overall, I wouldn’t really recommend Animation Throwdown: The Quest for Cards. Mainly because it is a pay-to-win game, and it is a direct port from Kongregate/App Store. However, I can only recommend this game if you want to play a free-to-play card game.  But don’t pay for any extra in-game items, as many are expensive. You can also earn all the in-game items, but you get them at a slower rate.
