Disclosure:I had obtained Uni for free during a giveaway however I don’t do biased reviews.
Uni is a local multiplayer only mini game compilation. In which 2 players are competing against each other on a collection of 40 different mini games.
Despite this fact, that Uni does provide players with a selection of 40 unique minigames. With various different game genres covered to suit all interests. On paper this seems like a decent offering for a mini game collection. Considering that there is an abundance of games are on hand for you to play. Although, most games are quick and only last for a short amount of time. This is because a lot of the games are time based.
Some of the games I did manage to play on are quite strange because they names that have got nothing to do with the games themselves. Taking one game for an example called internet_disconnected. Which if you’re basing your first impressions of what to expect based upon the name of the game. The game sounds like a game to do with internet connection. However the game involves 2 ice creams running across a candy inspired level and jumping over various obstacles such as cakes. I think that the name of the game is bizarre as I was expecting a sci fi type game.
On a technical level the games on offer are very poor as most are under developed in various ways. I found that some games aren’t developed correctly. The game time is a good example of this. In Time only player 1 can press the action button to stop the time and player 2 cannot do so. It isn’t just the fact that player 2 cannot do a thing it removes your ability to react in any context. Even if an attempt to end the timer is made after any amount of time. Furthermore it also stops the game in its tracks and you cannot progress any further in the game or go back into any menus. As a result of this you end up shutting the game down as a result.
At least a few games weren’t developed according to their intended designs. Alpha battle demonstrates this perfectly. On Alpha battle there are two whiteboards in game. One of which should be on the left for player one. The other on the right side is for player two. Design wise this makes sense as each player gets their own letters. However you can actually slide across the other side.
I also think that Uni itself is poorly built. Firstly you cannot take away the second player under any context. As a result of this it is pointless if you wanted to play against the AI/yourself. As a result of its bad implementation and design, it is hard to find out the games controls. When it comes to finding out what the controls are for player 2 it is frustrating. Since the game as the only controls mentioned are the number keys (which don’t always work biased the keyboard you are using.).
You also cannot change the games controls under any context. In some instances, the game doesn’t fully explain the controls used in the game(s). The first time was while playing in standard mode. In which if you try to use the controls mentioned to switch to other pages to pick a different game. The game will tell you to use a/d when the actual controls is q/e. The second instance is in the mode that picks 5 random games for you to play on. The game will not provide any list of controls for you on any of the games. I think that the game should at least explain what you’re doing and the controls before gameplay starts.
Inevitably I think that Uni lacks redeeming qualities and isn’t worth playing on. Furthermore, even if the game was free to play, it wouldn’t be worth playing.
