Rise Of The Triad Review

Rise of the triad is a reboot of a 1995 first person shooter of the same name. In which you control 1 of 5 agents of the H.U.N.T team that are on San Nicholas Island to investigate activity on the island. The reboot keeps true to the original game in many ways. The game keeps many of the mechanics/style from the original game. Particularly, the first-person platform segments, items used in game and the humour.

Whilst this is a game that is remake of old game. This game does stay faithful to the original material.  Such as the keeping the game mechanics that set it apart from other games at the time. Including the fast pace of the action, the multitude and variety of power ups ranging from being high through to becoming a dog.

But there are a lot of positive and modern changes that fit in with the game. Including the soundtrack of the game as it is the same songs in the original game. However the soundtrack is now remixed into a heavy metal style. I like this as it is true to the originals as well as having a new, strong and a different style to the music.

However the game doesn’t remove any of the out dated mechanics that plagued the original game. Such as the amount of weapons you can carry. Rather than allowing players to carry one of each weapon type. The game only allows you to carry 1 explosive weapon and 1 magic weapon. Another feature that remains unchanged is the linear design of the levels. Despite the fact that it may be seen positively since it simplifies the game for other players. The linear levels do detract some things from gameplay.  Due to the linear gameplay, I felt discouraged from exploring the area fully to find any secrets.

However I do also think that whilst there is plenty of familiar content that has been reused and/or remade. There are many new additions that have been added to the game. Nevertheless there have been some adjustments to the game that have made it more hospitable to modern gamers. A good example is the ability to use the sights of particular guns when aiming. Although I found this to be a neat addition but it didn’t make me be any more accurate in game.

Sadly this game is an extremely buggy game and there are plenty of bugs that live in the terrarium that is the game. When I was playing the game, I experienced crashes constantly. Whether I had completed a level or reached a checkpoint. Even if the game had just had a quick save. Although sometimes it does it for no reason whatsoever. Taking this as an example as one time I had left the game running. Even though it was only for two minutes as I used the toilet. Unsurprisingly it had crashed by the time I came back.

It does also crash if you use other programs in the background. I wanted to record game footage using windows 10 built in screen recorder. The game then decided to crash the moment the game started playing. I think that it is a shame that the game is as buggy as it is.

Rise Of The Triad

Overall I wouldn’t recommend getting Rise of the Triad as long as it is at full price. However I would recommend getting it during a steam sale as it isn’t really a bad game content wise. However the game as it stands is very buggy and the only accessible part of the game is the campaign.  Also I feel that if somebody had personally played on the original version. There is probably more for them to get from the game in comparison to someone who hasn’t.
